Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber “Business After Hours" Chamber leaders have called it the most exciting and worthwhile membership service across the country.  Business After Hours, at the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce, has surpassed everyone's expectations.  And for one reason--It Works!  Business is being done at Business After Hours.   How does it work?  Scheduled as requested, and moved to various locations throughout the area, Business After Hours can be scheduled for one and a half or two hours such as from 5:00 to 7:00, 5:30-7:00, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., or 6:30 to 8:00 or 8:30pm in a relaxed setting with refreshments and free hors d'oeuvres available.  You drop your business card in the "hat" when you check in.  With your name tag firmly affixed, you set forth with purpose to:  1) Make and renew business contacts, 2) Tell other members about your goods and services, and 3) See what is new on the business scene.   There is no formal program planned, but the host for the evening does supply several nice door prizes.  The winners' cards are drawn from the "hat."  The order of the day is to have fun and exchange business cards--so bring plenty! These are not, however, social occasions.  They are business meetings, requiring a certain degree of calculation to achieve maximum effect.  If you don't plan anything, you don't do anything.  To get the very most out of the evening, here are some tips for taking the best advantage of Business After Hours:   Attitude is key.  You must be friendly and outgoing.   Set a goal for the number of new contacts you will have at the end of the evening.  Quickly acknowledge your friends and set off after those you don't know.   Rehearse a quick eight to ten-word description of your business.  Keep your cards handy, loose in your pocket. If someone sounds interested, take their card and promise to call the next day.  BAH is a time for a brief chat, not an hour-long sales call.   Use the time in food and beverage lines to talk to people.  Don't wait to get "settled in" and then start chatting.   Get others in your company to go, so you can achieve maximum coverage of the room.   You will retain all the business cards collected that evening.  You follow-up in any way you like--a phone call "Didn't get a chance to meet you at BAH, but..." or a mailing--"Here is the material we talked about." If you haven't attended a Business After Hours in the past, plan to join us at our next one.  Come see what lots of potential customers in one-room looks like.  It Works!   To schedule a Business After Hours, call the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber at (907) 694-4702.

Your Chamber recognizes the commitment of individuals, businesses, civic and professional leaders who make a difference in the quality of life in Chugiak and Eagle River. There are a variety of recognition programs throughout the year that celebrates the gift of giving. EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION This year the Excellence in Education Awards Dinner will be held Tuesday, March 28 5:30-7:30pm at the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center.  The Awards are supported by donations from the Eagle River Area Rotary and the Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation. Each of the twelve public school principals select an individual whom they believe deserves public recognition for a year of outstanding work in education. The awards are a visible symbol of our organizations’ support for the education community and the difficult work that they do. These annual recognitions also serve to demonstrate the merits of partnerships between business, community and schools.Awards dinner is open to the public. Call the Chamber at 694.4702 for reservations by March 21, 2017.   BEAR PAW AWARDS Annually, at the beginning of Bear Paw Festival, six distinguished awards are presented. Nomination Forms are due by June 1, 2017. Annual Bear Paw Community Service Award Presented to an Outstanding Organization (started in 1970) Annual Bear Paw Community Service Award Presented to an Outstanding Individual (started in 1970) Volunteer Service In Excellence Award Spirit of the Festival Award Excellence In Community Award and The President’s Award These distinguished service awards are designed to recognize the breadth and depth of commitment that we are privileged to witness on a daily basis. ANDERSON AWARD This award was created in 2007 and is named after Kenny & Dick Anderson. The Anderson Award is all about selfless service. Anderson Brothers were contractors and they were a huge part of building this town. Anderson’s put in our roads and they probably put in most everybody’s driveways. They maintained our streets and took on huge excavation projects throughout Southcentral.  But at the end of the day, when most of us rested, these guys kept going. They donated their time, talents and equipment and built Lions Park, created our ball fields, put in our town clock, hauled bleachers, carry bands in the parade … and that’s just naming a few little things. Many of us have had the benefit experiencing the Anderson’s warm spirit and generous nature. To us the name “Anderson” is the personification of what it means to be in and of a community.  Kenny continues their tradition today and his work is done in the spirit of silent service…with nothing expected in return.   AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Presented annually at the Chamber Dinner/Auction in September,  the Ambassador of the Year award goes to the volunteer who went above and beyond to help make our events successful. Let us know when you see this happening! Nominate by emailing the Chamber at executivedirector@cer.org.
